On February 1 st 1920 "The Industrial College" was founded in Cluj-Napoca . It successively became "The Arts and Crafts College ", "The Technical College", "The College for Technical Conductors" (1922), "The College for Electromechanical Engineers" (1937).

Following Decision no.263327 regarding higher education published in the Government Gazette nr.249-26 dated October 1948 "The Mechanics Institute" was founded in Cluj-Napoca , thus being one of the oldest and most appreciated institutions of technical higher education in the country. On September 1 st 1953, according to Decision no. 2688 of the Council of Ministers, the institute became "The Polytechnic Institute of Cluj-Napoca". In the meeting of March 27 th 1992, the senate of the PIC-N decided to rename The Polytechnic Institute to The Technical University. The Senate's decision was legalized through the Governmental Decision nr.458 of July 29 1994 regarding the organization and running of the Ministry of Education, published in the Government Gazette no.226/1 of August 19 1994.

The Technical University of Cluj-Napoca trains hundreds of specialists in the most important fields of engineering every year. The University is renowned both inside Romania and abroad and its graduates are ranked among the best.

The Faculty of Automation and Computer Science is one of the eight faculties of the Technical University of Cluj Napoca. The Faculty has had this name since 1990, when the former Faculty of Electrical Engineering was spilt into three faculties: the Faculty of Automation and Computer Science, the Faculty of de Electrical Engineering and the Faculty of Electronics and Communications. The Faculty of Automation and Computer Science is a public institution of higher education with a teaching and research mission in the fields of automated control engineering and computer science and engineering. At the same time, the Faculty fulfils a college-type teaching mission in the field of system and computer science.

The specialization "Automation and Computers" was established as a separate specialization within the Faculty of Electrical Engineering on July 4, 1977. The Computer Science group, the later department, was set up in 1982.

After the December 1989 Revolution, the Faculty of Automation and Computer Science was authorized to run temporarily, having the following specializations: "Industrial Informatics and Automation", "Industrial Informatics and Automation (courses taught in English)", "Computers", "Computers (courses taught in English)"and "Computing Technique(college)" in 1995,according to the Governmental Decision nr568/1995.

The specializations "Industrial Informatics and Automation", "Industrial Informatics and Automation (courses taught in English)", "Computers", "Computers (courses taught in English)"and "Computing Technique (college)" were fully accredited through the Governmental Decision no 442/1998, published in the Government Gazette of August 10 1998.
