The Department of Electric Drives and Robots was established in 1991. The founding members are academic staff of the team dealing with Electric Drives in the former Department of Electrical Engineering from the Faculty bearing the same name. The team was in fact formed in the 1960's when the first graduates in electrical engineering of the Polytechnic Institute of Cluj finished the faculty and were employed as academic staff. The team mentioned has acquired, as time went on, a rich and solid tradition and fame. That is mainly due to the founding members: prof. Arpad KELEMEN (the first of the team leaders, Head of the department beginning with 1975, the first Ph.D. supervisor in Cluj and Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering between 1976 and 1985), prof. Micrea CRIVII (who belonged to the first group of graduates in Electrical Engineering in 1965) to whom other former students joined: prof. Viorel TRIFA (graduate from 1969) in 1969, Ambrus SZELELY (graduate from 1973) in 1973, Maria IMECS (graduate from 1970) in 1975, Richard Emil MARSCHALKO (graduate from 1976) in 1979, Teodor Crisan PANA (graduate from 1979) in 1979, Calin Gheorghe RUSU (graduate from 1981) joined.
