The Department of Materials Science and Engineering
The Department of Materials Science and Technology was set up in 1948, when the former Polytechnic Institute of Cluj was established. Provides fundamental/applicative training focused on the structure, properties, classes, selection and advanced processing methods for the upgraded engineering materials, to all students of the specializations in the Faculties of Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanics and Machines Building. As a department in the Faculty of Materials Science and Engineering, the department tutors the specialization of Materials Science. It provides, also, the theoretical and practical training for most of the specialty subjects of the post-graduate specializations „Materials Engineering” and „New Materials with Special Properties”, the last being tutored by the department as well. The research activity is approaching fields such as: Materials Science, Advanced Materials and Technologies, Powder Metallurgy, Structural Analyses of Materials, Nano-crystalline / Nanostructured Materials, Functional Materials – magnetic, highly permeable, engineering ceramics, biomaterials, heavy alloys. The department has also developed an important Materials Science and Powder Metallurgy research centre (B type, accredited by the National Council of Research in Higher Education).

The Department of Materials Processing Engineering

The materials processing engineering tradition is closely related with the beginning and development of metallurgical industry in our country. The development of materials processing field opened opportunities for creation of  numerous companies, spread all over the country, that are specialized on producing finished and semi-finished goods for economic and social activities. The requirements of modern higher education involve efficient processing of materials and development of new materials with special characteristics, therefore the change of the name of Department of Plastic Deformation into the Department of Materials Processing Engineering was a necessity. However, this department continues teaching and research tradition in the field of hot-working since its foundation in 1958. The mission of the Department of Materials Processing Engineering is to offer high quality education aiming to develop the intellectual capacity, moral character and professional knowledge of the students, as essential basis for formation of future high qualified engineers. Therefore, our graduates will be capable of developing and implementing the engineering concepts and projects of materials processing in production.

The Department of Environmental Engineering

The Department of Environmental Engineering has been functioning in its current structure and name since 2007. The department coordinates the Environmental Engineering and Protection in Industry university degree program and the Special Procedures in Environmental Protection advanced studies course. The disciplines taught by staff members from the Department assure specific abilities in training the future engineers specialized in Materials Engineering and Environmental Engineering. The Department has modern facilities for teaching technical disciplines not only for Environmental Engineering, but also for Materials Engineering. The members` scientific research activities are carried out on the basis of numerous national and international research grants, in two main directions - Material Processing Engineering and Environmental Protection Engineering - such as: Shaping and optimizing the casting procedures; Modern technologies of making products from recyclable materials; Waste product management and rehabilitating the industrial area; Implementing the incorporated in industrial processes management; Technical and consultancy studies. An important contribution to the research activity is brought by the PhD program coordinated by five professors.

The Department of Physics
The department of Physics offers courses Physics, Technical Physics and Experimental Physics for the eight faculties belonging to the university. Courses take place in the first and/or the second academic year for the students of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering and Civil Engineering .  Besides these courses, a special stress is put on subjects related to Physics, such as Solid State Physics, Sensor Physics, Semiconductor Physics, Optics, Biophysics, Microwave Physics, Quantum Physics, Magnetic Materials Physics, Environmental Physics, Equations of Mathematical Physics, Thin layers, Superconductors etc.

The Department of Chemistry
The Chemistry Department ensures the teaching of the disciplines within the Faculty of Materials Science and Engineering. The staff of the department cover both the disciplines of Chemistry taught at almost all the sections within the Technical University, as well as special disciplines such as: Materials Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Ceramic Materials, Environmental Chemistry, Chemical Instrumental Analysis. The research activity within the department is mainly developed in the field of materials chemistry, analitycal chemistry, ceramic materials, computational chemistry, coal chemistry and physical chemistry.
