The Faculty of Materials Science and Engineering was set up in 1990 as a consequence of the initiative of the Department of Materials Science and Technology (STM) that has had for a long time well known - in-country and abroad - research and educational achievements in advanced materials. In fact, the establishment of a faculty had been an older wish of Professor Alexandru Domsa, who, in the 1970s, as rector of the university and head of department, he made a survey concerning the needs of enterprises for higher education graduates in the field of materials. In spite of the demands expressed by the industry and of the proposal sent to the Ministry of Education of that time, the idea was not a successful one. In 1990, this idea had the chance of becoming a reality through the effort of the leadership of the university. The Faculty has incorporated specializations such as Technologic Equipment, Metal Casting, Plastic Deformation and Heat Treatment, Metallurgical Processes.

In the present, the Faculty of Materials Science and Engineering has five departments (Department of Materials Science and Technology, Department of Materials Processing Engineering, Department of Environmental Engineering, Department of Physics and Department of Chemistry) and offers educational and research programs in two fields: Materials Engineering and Enviromental Engineering.
